alan abrahams, the man behind portable, emerged out of the ruins of a post apartheid south africa. growing up in an impoverished cape town township, tagged >beverly hills< by the locals, abrahams was always immersed in his sisters ritual of getting ready for a night out to a soundtrack of 80s soul, hi life and hip hop. inspired by the first batch of chicago house records, the foundations were laid for his future in music. experimenting with ways of combining traditional african rhythms with the 4/4 sound of house,abrahams completed various projects in south africa. most of which gave a commentary to the political turmoil of the country at the time. abrahams inevitably became frustrated by the geographic isolation of the country and relocated to london in 1997. in the uk abrahams went on to complete various releases for internationally recognised labels such as context and background records before starting up his own label, süd electronic in 2002

how many of todayÆs producers have been releasing music for 13 years? not many. how many will still be recording 13 years from now? hard to say. what can be said without doubt however is that donnacha costello is in this for the long haul. since 1996 he has released dozens of 12″,,,s and made significant contributions to electronic music from 2001Æs classic ambient album together is the new alone to 2004Æs universally acclaimed colorseries to 2006Æs rigorously conceptual 6x6=36 amongst others. shedding the skin of his ten year old minimise label, costello emerges from its semantic stranglehold to bring us his new label and platform look long. from this first release it is clear that costello aims to produce work of lasting quality and beauty with little regard for what a turbulent marketplace might expect of him. complexity and simplicity are addressed in equal measure here and with some surprise we find traces of eric satie, chet baker, pat metheny and steve reich. perhaps unsurprisingly we also find the unmistakable traces of grace and emotion that have become costelloÆs trademarks

after internationally acknowledged releases on philpot and buzzin fly, here today surprise us with their first ep on 33rpm records. here today (florian schirmacher & engin oeztuerk) shape computer based soulful electronic athmospheres! focused on house music but always willing to experiment with various well integrated influences, styles and sounds. engin oeztuerk and florian schirmacher share the musical affection for marvin gaye, the meters, theo parrish, basic channel, eric b. & rakim and alexander skrjabin. as a member of the band faruk green engin oeztuerk already released records on copasetik and 33rpm records. florian schirmacher has been releasing music on labels such as cadenza, cocoon, morris audio to name but a few. he is also part of the electronic house music duos glowing glisses (pokerflat) and federleicht (connaisseur). on the comrades ep, these two musicians team up with benjamin wild. benjamin wild produced ambient music in the early nineties. since the mid-90s his focus has been turning to dance music. you might know some recordings he did for kompakt, perlon, morris audio, force tracks and many other labels. let them out and enjoy!

no let up from those disco deviants ! for number seven in the series the imprint is proud to release the first set of edits by the rather excellent situation. they first came to light after passing a cd to greg wilson after a gig. he was blown away by the quality of their edits and they instantly started to feature prominently in his sets to much acclaim. then greg included one of their cuts pushin on on his recent resident advisor mix and their talents were a secret no more as the interest flooded in. that track pushin on features on this release. instantly bringing to mind classics like remember me, unfinished sympathy and back to life, it really is a wonderful piece of music which moves both the body and the soul. on the flip, they rework jazzy dees wicked electrofunk track get on up into a dj-friendly dancefloor bomb. its an amazing debut and theres much more to come on their own imprint which is launching this year. enjoy the music
